Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi and the Kanpur Violence of 1931
Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi’s death during the communal violence in Kanpur in March 1931 provides a documented episode through which several aspects of India’s nationalist period can be examined together: journalism, Hindu-Muslim relations, political leadership, communal violence, personal courage, and the meaning of sacrifice. Vidyarthi was the editor of Pratap , a Hindi-language newspaper based in Kanpur. He represented an independent nationalist voice outside Gandhi’s Congress framework. His newspaper gave space to political voices that were not necessarily carried by the Congress press. The series has previously documented Vidyarthi’s support for Bhagat Singh. Vidyarthi’s commitment to Hindu-Muslim unity was reflected in his relationships with people from both communities. When violence erupted in Kanpur, he did not remain outside the affected areas.
